ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG or EKG)

If you have a family history of cardiac problems, such as a parent or even a grandparent with a history of heart disease, it is especially important that you visit our office. Early detection is your best protection against heart disease.

EKG Albuquerque

An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) measures the electrical activity of the heart. The heart generates an electrical signal, which emanates from the heart and is conducted throughout the body. Small electrical sensors, called electrodes, are placed on the skin to detect the electrical impulses that originate in the heart. This electrical “activity” is then converted into a graph that can give Dr. Khoo an idea of whether or not the heart is beating normally.

Reasons for Performing an Electrocardiogram

An ECK is used to diagnose heart attacks and heart rhythm problems, provide clues about other heart conditions, detect imbalances of electrolytes in your body, such as potassium and magnesium, as well as identify other problems related to your heart health.

Dr. Khoo and her Albuquerque heart team may suggest an ECG if a patient presents with symptoms such as:

  • Chest Pain or Discomfort
  • Palpatations
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Weakness
  • Anxiety
  • Unexplained Nausea
  • History of Syncope (Fainting)

An electrocardiogram may also be obtained if a patient is scheduled to have surgery with general anesthesia, performs an occupation that stresses the heart, is an older adult or has diabetes, as a follow up to a heart-related procedure (i.e. pacemaker) or has a pre-existing condition related to heart disease.

Prior to an electrocardiogram being performed, you may be asked to have a physical examination and/or asked about your medical history. During the procedure you will lie quietly on your back with your shirt removed. Six small, sticky pads with attached wires (electrodes) will be placed across your chest, while others will be placed on your arms and legs. The wires will connect to the ECG machine. You will not feel anything during the test.

Once your test is completed you may resume normal activities as recommended by Dr. Khoo.

Dr. Khoo will interpret the test results and, based on the findings, may suggest further testing or provide you with an appropriate treatment options.

We encourage you to ask as many questions as necessary until you are confident that you understand your heart condition, medications or procedures you may be considering.

In her practice as a top heart doctor in Albuquerque, Dr. Michelle Khoo wants you to be informed, comfortable and confident about your treatment plan.
