A Cardiovascular Consultation is a very important aspect of your cardiac wellness and overall well-being. It is an opportunity for patients to discuss their cardiovascular health, cardiac problems or complaints, understand the risks and possible complications as well as explore ways to adopt healthy lifestyle habits. It also helps patients to better understand the therapies methods and treatment available for their particular condition.
During the cardiac consultation, Dr. Khoo or a member of her esteemed team of cardiac specialists will evaluate past medical history, perform a thorough physical examination and diagnostics tests to assess the risk of developing heart diseases. Early diagnosis of many cardiovascular diseases and conditions can enhance your prognosis and minimize complications.
How to prepare for your cardiovascular consultation
To ensure you are well prepared for your consultation:
- Bring all necessary medical records to your cardiovascular consultation appointment. This allows us to better understand your heart condition and can avoid repetition of specific cardiac diagnostic tests
- Make sure you are prepared to discuss your past medical history, surgical history, family history and medications, prescription and over-the-counter, that you are currently taking
- Be prepared to openly discuss your lifestyle habits, dietary habits and also about your profession or work history. Your lifestyle as well as the type of work or nature of your job may be associated with risk factors for cardiovascular diseases
Some of the cardiovascular diagnostic tests that may be performed to determine heart disease include:
Echocardiography – This test uses sound waves to create images of the heart. The images determine the size of the heart, strength of the heart muscles, presence of heart diseases, and any heart valve malfunctions.
Stress Testing – This is a diagnostic test to determine the functioning of the heart under stress. It gathers information about how your heart works during physical activity. You may be asked to walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike during this test while Dr. Khoo or a member of her professional team performs an echocardiogram that will measure blood pressure changes, heart rate, heart rhythm and respiration.
Electrocardiogram – During an echocardiogram (ECG or EKG), small sensors, known as electrodes, are placed on your upper body and legs which captures electrical signals from your heart. This test determines functionality of the heart, rate of heart beat, irregularities in rhythm and also can identifies if the heart is enlarged or damaged.
Once the results are obtained Dr Khoo and her professional team of cardiovascular specialists will develop a plan for further evaluation or may provide you with treatment options.
We may also suggest lifestyle modifications such as losing weight, increase in physical activities, smoking cessation and limiting alcohol consumption along with the implementing cholesterol lowering medications.
If you are diagnosed with coronary artery disease during the cardiovascular consultation, Dr. Khoo may suggest coronary revascularization through angioplasty with or without stenting or coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). These surgeries will lower the cardiac risk such as myocardial infarction or death.
We encourage you to ask as many questions as necessary until you are confident that you understand your heart condition, medications or procedures you may be considering.
